KINETIC MINIMAL HOUSING

Type: Design Research
Location: Los Angeles, California, USA
Duration: June 2015

Cheap pre-manufactured building units might be a solution for housing shortages in ever more crowded urban areas with high population turnovers. As demand for urban housing continues to increase, this project aims to accommodate marginalised sectors of society, urban nomads and casualties of gentrification and soaring housing markets. In such a scenario density becomes a crucial factor. The project addresses an extreme version of this urban future, using compact transformable prefabricated systems. This module is inspired by Pullman cars, their cabins of moving walls, furniture and shelving units providing relative comfort in a limited space. High tenant turnover will require the repeated modules to be durable with easily maintainable and replaceable components and clear user instructions.
